The long and the short of it

When forced I will cheerfully quote an hourly rate, and am delighted when someone will pay it. I am much more open to a more pragmatic approach, however, that being to work with the client to clearly define the scope of work and agree upon a flat fee with the understanding that that fee can be revisited should scope drastically change or the dreaded project creep occur. It’s just easier for everybody.
